The Background Story

Shereece, Founded Urban Youth back in 2017, after being InSpired by Founder & Editor-in-chief of First Instinct Magazine Cerys Matthews, who I previously worked for and did work experience with back in 2013 as a Writer/Contributor for First Instinct Magazine. I went on to start and build my writing career in media, by working/writing for several online magazine publications, music blog websites, and newsletters such as; Lewisham College Magazine (The LC) Retox Magazine, Rawroots, Kemptation, Roadworks Media, First Instinct, and many more.

And also by sharing my online collective work of articles, that I had written over the years by using social media platform sites such as; Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, & WordPress. I wanted to take my writing to the next level, and saw it as a good opportunity for myself to develop and promote myself as a Freelance Writer, and get published work out there and to share my work with the members of the public online and through social media sites.

In November 2009, at the age 18, a friend at College, told me that they were looking for writers at Lewisham College to write for their student college magazine, it seem at the time like a great experience writing for them, I had no experience of writing for a magazine, so I jumped at the chance and the opportunity, as at the time I was a student at Lewisham College and was studying a NVQ Level 2 Business Administration Course. In November 2009, I started writing and contributing articles for Lewisham College Student Magazine called The LC Magazine. I wrote and contributed articles on; Street Dance, The Comic Book Club, and What Hot & What’s Not.

In February 2012 , I Joined The NXG Group Team (The Next Generation Group) as an Admin Assistant/Voluntary Contributor to gain some more work experience, to help build my career in admin and the media sector. I wrote and contributed articles on; About to Blow 2012: Emeli Sande, Celebrity Gossip; Rihanna & Chris Brown Collaboration, and latest Fashion for 2012.

In Summer 2013 to 2015, I started doing voluntary work writing for online magazine publications, and music blog websites, basically building on my previous writing experience.

In June 2014, I started writing for Live Magazine, but my time there was cut short  I had to leave,  I was in the process of starting a 5 months work placement at Evelyn 190 Centre. Evelyn 190 is a community charity based advice centre, offering advice, assistance and advocacy in several areas of law, including debt, employment, housing and welfare benefits. In February 2015, I returned back to Live Magazine to continue writing articles for them, and it was there that I met my best friend and past business partner Andre Farquharson,  We bonded over our love and passion for writing, music, and journalism media.

In October 2014, I decided to create and set up my own blog website  myblogspotword.wordpress.com, I had been writing my blog for 3 years now.

In September 2017, I founded and created Urban Youth, I came up with the name Urban Youth, when I first started out as a volunteer as a Social Media Assistant for a community charity organisation.  The name Urban Youth had a great significance to me, so that’s how the name came about. InSpire is a community arts learning charity that works with people of all ages and needs in Southwark, including young people and older adults who have learning difficulties/learning disabilities. I have been building Urban Youth for nearly 4 years now.
