A while back in August, it was confirmed that Idris Elba has joined the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as Knuckles the Echidna in the upcoming light-hearted action-adventure film for Paramount Pictures in collaboration with Sega Sammy Group.
It was quite unexpected but not out of the norm when it comes to casting the Golden Globe and SAG-winning actor originally from Hackney, London. After rumblings that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Momoa were in the running for the role of Knuckles, the news was soon debunked by Variety.
With Knuckles being one of the most popular characters in the Sonic franchise, at least behind Sonic and Tails, it would be interesting to find out how Elba will approach the character of Knuckles. Will it be a North American accent suited to New York, Baltimore or Philadelphia or his signature British Cockney accent? Who knows? Hopefully it will be a blast.
As you know, the original 2020 film, Sonic the Hedgehog, is a personal favourite of mine and I am pretty sue would be a favourite of my best little girl in another life. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 release date
In April 2020 last year, following the success of the first film which opened in February theatrically in film which opened in the United States, UK & Ireland one of the co-stars James Marsden felt that the studio should not announce a sequel at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic that the film industry is only just reeling from to date.
That next month in May, Paramount revealed the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog was in development, having received the green-light then. The film and television studio under ViacomCBS is currently scheduled for release in the US on April 8, 2022. Jeff Fowler, better known for writing and directing the animated short Gopher Broke at Blur Studio and who directed Sonic’s very first live-action film is returning to helm Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sonic 2 will have James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz reprises their roles as Sheriff Thomas “Tom” Michael Wachowski, Maddie Wachowski, Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik and Sonic respectively. Also reprising their roles is Natasha Rothwell as Rachel; Maddie’s older sister and Sonic’s adoptive aunt. Adam Pally will also return as Wade Whipple, Tom’s chief deputy.
Idris Elba joins the cast as Knuckles and Shemar Moore has an undisclosed role. It is uncertain whether Colleen Villard will return to voice Miles “Tails” Prower, who lent her voice to the orange-yellow twin-tailed fox in the mid-credits scene in the first film. The casting of Tails has been yet to be confirmed.

What is the story for Sonic 2 about?
Fowler is directing from a screenplay by Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington based on the Sega videogame franchise. Back in 12th May, it was revealed on My Nintendo News the plot synopsis of the film which is as follows:
“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”

There have been no more details as of late in regards to Sonic 2, except that they have already wrapped filming in Hawaii in June. I believe we should be expecting the first trailer either before the end of the year or sometime in January 2022. If we hear anything come up from this space, we will be sure to let you know.
