The Matrix Resurrections trailer is mind-blowing and left us with more questions

Posted on September 14th, 2021

I have reported The Matrix 4 once before it was dubbed it received the official name of The Matrix Resurrections. At the time, when it was first covered, the creative team were still filming amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Sept. 9, Warner Bros. released their official trailer on their YouTube channel. It made its debut at 2 pm GMT. The Matrix Resurrections opens in a futuristic suburb in San Francisco, CA with Thomas Anderson aka Neo (Keanu Reeves) in a therapy session with an unknown psychiatrist played by Neil Patrick Harris. Neo is plagued by memories that appear as dreams and he questions his own reality.

The scene cuts to Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) who comes across Neo and it is clear she has forgotten the events of the last film, The Matrix Revolutions, but vaguely seems familiar to her. It appears that the secret power of “The One” has been nullified by the blue pills and Neo’s identity is being manipulated by the machines somehow.

A new incarnation of Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) encounters Neo with a red pill. The scene then shifts to a presumed Red Pill member freed from the Matrix –  dubbed “Bugs” (Jessica Henwick) – who attempts to show Neo the truth. Neo gets into a fight in a dojo which seems to reawaken his dormant superhuman abilities.

The following clips showcase Bugs, Morpheus, Neo and Trinity getting chased by Agent Johnson (Daniel Bernhardt) and other sentient programs known as “Agents”, as well as clips in the real world with partially empty human pods in a cultivation field in the machine’s power plant.

So many questions have been cropping up like how did Morpheus become a new, younger version of himself? What is the state of affairs between the humans and machines since the truce? How are Neo and Trinity still alive after all this time? Plus how does the Merovingian play into all of this? There are so many questions left open than answers and of course many theories spurred from this trailer.

The Matrix Resurrections stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Lambert Wilson, Daniel Bernhardt and Brian J. Smith.

Lana Wachowski is directing from screenplay she has co-written with David Mitchell and Aleksander Hemon. Wachowski, Grant Hill and James McTeigue are producing under Village Roadshow Pictures in association with Venus Castina Productions. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing.

The Matrix Resurrections is set for release in cinemas Dec. 22, 2021 and stream digitally on HBO Max. A copy of the trailer can be found attached below.
