The Matrix 4

Some time back, Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed release dates for some projects on their film slate. One of them is The Flash, which has already been covered here on Urban Youth Magazine and the next film is the untitled Matrix 4, which is set for release on May 21, 2021.

Another film, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, which is not quite so lucky, is the live-action adaptation of the post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk manga created by Katsuhiro Otomo, titled Akira. The film, which spawned the late 80s anime film of the same name has been knocked off the release schedule by Warner due to its director, Taika Waititi, and his busy commitments with Marvel Studios.

The Matrix 4 will be the first in the Matrix franchise to not be co-written and co-directed by both of The Wachowskis; instead one-half of The Wachowskis, Lana Wachowski, will be co-writing, directing and producing the sequel. It will see Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith reprise their roles in the forthcoming film.

In August 2019, Warner Bros. formally confirmed The Matrix 4 was in development and to be jointly produced with Village Roadshow Pictures. Also in development is a Matrix prequel. Zak Penn, the screenwriter behind such films as Last Action Hero, Behind Enemy Lines, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk developed a treatment for a new film. He also had an interest in hiring Michael B. Jordan for a role. This is a separate project from The Wachowskis.

The story of The Matrix 4 has been kept under wraps and it is unknown how the characters Neo and Trinity will come into play in the sequel since both have died during the events of The Matrix Revolutions. Matrix 4 will also see Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris join the cast.

Matrix 4 is to have Lana Wachowski co-write the screenplay with David Mitchell and Aleksander Hemon. Wachowski will direct and produce with Grant Hill. Principal photography is set to begin in Chicago in February 2020.
